Aqara Thermostat Hub W200 Review: A Smart, Feature-Rich HomeKit Alternative with Caveats
Overview
I bought the Aqara Thermostat Hub W200 because I wanted a HomeKit device that also works as a hub.
You will spend 160 dollars on this unit which puts it right between the prices for Nest and Ecobee.
It uses Matter to talk to your other gear and has a very shiny screen.
I really like how simple the box makes everything look.
Key Features
Apple Adaptive Temperature is the best part because it changes the heat while you sleep.
I watched the Clean Energy Guidance tool move my heater times to help the earth stay green.
This device acts as a Zigbee hub so you do not need more bridges for your sensors.
The radar inside the glass sees you walk by and turns the light on fast.
It sends all your room data to the Apple Home app without any lag.
Design & Installation
The gadget looks very expensive and has a nice shape with big numbers.
Swiping the screen feels good but your fingers leave oily marks on the glass.
I took my old Nest out and put this one in under ten minutes.
The back plate is a bit small so you might see marks on your wall from your old thermostat.
Keep some paint ready to fix those spots when you finish.
Compatibility & Limitations
It works with heat pumps and boilers and most other things in your house.
There is a big problem because the compressor stops working at 20 degrees.
My power bill went up because the backup heat turned on way too much in the cold weather.
The app does not explain the settings very well for a normal person.
You should wait for an update if you live in a place with lots of snow.
Ecosystem Integration
If you own Aqara doorbells you can see the video right on the thermostat screen.
I use my extra room sensors to tell the hub when to start the air.
Apple fans might not need the hub part but it is nice to have extra signal.
Everything talks to each other in my house now.
Verdict
I think the W200 is a very solid choice for your smart home.
It connects to HomeKit better than most other things I ever tried.
Just make sure you check your heater type before you spend your cash.
You will love how the screen looks if you can keep it clean.
