Atom Zombie Smasher Gets Surprise 15th Anniversary Update

15-Year-Old Indie Game Atom Zombie Smasher Gets Surprise Steam Update

A Blast From The Past

Generally, I am really happy to see old games getting updates, and today was no exception, I stumbled onto an old favorite on Steam. Obviously, it felt like a time-warp, because *Atom Zombie Smasher* just got a fresh patch after 15 years, which is pretty amazing. Usually, games this old do not get updated, but it seems like the developers still care about this one.

What’s New In The Update

Normally, updates are pretty minor, but this one has some cool new features, like the ability to slow time down to a crawl, which is literally 1% of normal speed. Apparently, this turns the frantic action into a turn-based puzzle, which sounds like a lot of fun. Sometimes, little changes can make a big difference, and I also noticed a handy Escape-key shortcut to deselect units, which is really useful.

Technical Polish

Probably, the most important updates are the technical ones, because they make the game more stable, like the fix for the startup glitch that was affecting Mac users. Hopefully, this means that the game will load properly now, and players can enjoy it without any issues. Usually, when a game is this old, the developers do not bother to update it, but it seems like these devs are still supporting their game.

Where To Grab It

Currently, the game is half-off on Steam, which is a great deal, because it is a classic indie game that is still fun to play. Obviously, if you have not played it before, now is the perfect time to try it out, and if you have played it before, you can revisit it and see the new updates. Generally, I think it is really cool that the studio behind it, Blendo Games, is still making games, and they have made some other great ones, like *Gravity Bone*, *Thirty Flights of Loving*, and *Skin Deep*.

Why It Still Matters

Eventually, all games become old, but some of them are still fun to play, and *Atom Zombie Smasher* is one of them, because it has a certain charm that is hard to find in modern games. Obviously, the fact that the devs are still updating it, is a testament to the community that still loves the game, and it is a reminder that indie games can be just as good as big budget ones. Usually, when a game is this old, it is forgotten, but it seems like *Atom Zombie Smasher* still has a lot to offer.
