Robinhood Expands into Indonesia with Strategic Acquisitions

Official Entry through Acquisitions

Robinhood Markets has made its official entry into Indonesia through the acquisition of two local firms: Buana Capital, a brokerage, and PT Pedagang Aset Kripto, a licensed crypto trader. This move highlights Robinhood’s strategy to tap into one of Southeast Asia’s most vibrant financial markets.

Leadership Perspective

Patrick Chan, Head of Asia at Robinhood, emphasized the significance of this expansion: “Indonesia is a rapidly growing market for trading, making it an ideal location to advance our mission of making finance accessible to everyone.”

Market Landscape

Indonesia is home to a thriving community of over 17 million crypto traders and more than 19 million capital‑market investors. According to Chainalysis, the country ranks 7th globally and 1st in Southeast Asia for crypto adoption. Financial account ownership has surged from 20% in 2011 to roughly 60% by 2024 (World Bank).

Acquisition Details

While the financial terms remain undisclosed, the deal is expected to close in the first half of 2026. Pieter Tanuri, the majority owner of both Buana Capital and PT Pedagang Aset Kripto, will serve as a strategic advisor to Robinhood under the agreement.

Regulatory Environment

Indonesia is tightening crypto‑trading regulations: taxes on offshore platforms have risen fivefold, and VAT on crypto mining has doubled. Despite these challenges, the government is exploring Bitcoin as a reserve asset to bolster financial stability.

Future Outlook

Robinhood aims to bring its innovative crypto‑trading services to Indonesian investors, leveraging global expertise to meet rising regional demand. The expansion is expected to give local investors access to the trusted services that have made Robinhood popular worldwide.
