Basware Launches Agentic AI for Autonomous Payables

Generally, companies like Basware are trying to make our lives easier with new technology. Obviously, Basware just launched two AI-driven agents that can run accounts-payable without human intervention, which is pretty cool. Basically, the tech uses generative AI, natural-language processing and deep-learning models, which they call “Agentic Finance”, and it’s supposed to be a game changer.

What’s new?

Normally, you would think that finance executives are all about new technology, but apparently, that’s not the case. According to a recent FT Longitude survey of 200 finance execs across the US, UK, France and Germany, 61% are already testing AI agents, yet 25% still don’t understand how they work, which is kind of surprising. Usually, I think companies like Basware are trying to fill this knowledge gap with new features and technologies.

Apparently, the survey showed that there’s a big gap between the adoption of AI agents and the understanding of how they work. Naturally, this is a problem that needs to be solved, and Basware is trying to do just that with their new features. Generally, I think this is a step in the right direction, but we’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out.

The two agents

Firstly, the AP Business Agent is designed to provide real-time recommendations for each invoice step, which can be really helpful. Secondly, the AP Data Agent allows you to ask simple questions like “Which invoices are pending approval in Germany?” and get a clear answer instantly, which is pretty convenient. Obviously, these agents are meant to make our lives easier, and I think they can be really useful.

Trust and governance built-in

Currently, Basware is working on a Supplier Agent that will talk to vendors automatically and a Pro Agent that will help AP clerks with conversational queries, which sounds like a great plan. Apparently, these new agents will help cut manual work and speed up dispute resolution, which is a win-win for everyone. Generally, I think this is a good direction for the company to be heading in.

Early adopters report wins

Billerud, a paper and packaging maker, has already seen higher invoice quality and a fast ROI after a few months with InvoiceAI, which is a great success story. Obviously, the AI agents are boosting efficiency and cutting costs, which is what every company wants. Normally, you would expect some bumps along the way, but it seems like Basware’s technology is working as promised.

Ultimately, Basware’s Agentic AI is shifting finance from simple automation to truly autonomous operations, which is a big deal. Generally, by embedding explainable AI inside a governed framework, the company is delivering touchless invoice processing, smarter decisions and measurable ROI for enterprises worldwide, which is a great achievement.
