DLSS 5 Reactions: Game Devs Divided on Nvidia’s AI Rendering
I watched the Nvidia presentation for DLSS 5 during the GTC 2026 event. You should check out the demo because it looks very different from older games. I thought the faces in Resident Evil Requiem looked like a weird filter was stuck on them. Most people are worried that this tech ruins the way games are supposed to look.
Overview
Nvidia says this is the future but the demo made me feel a bit uneasy. You might notice that the skin on the characters looks way too smooth. I think the AI is trying to fix things that are not actually broken. Many fans are calling this a step in the wrong direction for art.
Developer Reactions
Dave Oshry from New Blood Interactive calls this tech slopium. I feel like he is right about the AI look being quite bad. Guselect said we might be entering a bad ending for the gaming world. Each of these developers have a reason to hate this new stuff. Karla Ortiz believes it is very disrespectful to the work she does by hand. You can tell that forcing a specific look makes many artists feel very angry.
Ethical Concerns
Jon Ingold thinks the AI will erase real cultural identities to fit a norm. I think making every character look the same is a scary idea. Corey Brickley asked what happens if all women in games look like the same person. This sounds like a huge problem for diversity in your favorite titles. Chris Gardiner used a term called the Scarlett Johanssonification of video games. You need to understand that Alwei values the intention behind every light and shadow. He says art has no meaning if the AI takes over the final image. Sam Barlow warned that changing an actor’s face will lead to big lawsuits. I would hate to see a game studio get in trouble for a likeness issue.
Optimistic Views
Todd Howard saw it in Starfield and he said the experience was amazing. Kazuya Okada believes high quality assets will make the AI rendering much better. You can just turn the setting off if you do not like the look on your screen. Tarava777 thinks it is just a simple mod for your hardware that you can ignore. I guess some people will always be happy to try new toys.
Hardware & Accessibility
The first demo ran on two RTX 5090 cards which cost 8,000 dollars. You probably do not want to spend that much money on a computer right now. Nvidia says one card works but it might be too slow for your needs. This high price makes the tech hard for most people to actually use.
Conclusion
There is less details about the technical side of things right now. I want to see if Nvidia really gives artists the control they promised. You must decide for yourself if this rendering is good for the future of games. We will have to wait and see what the real game makers do next.
