MLB The Show 26 Review: Familiar Gameplay, Few Real Innovations

I think this game is like a small update for a phone. You see the same stuff as before. The creators just fixed a few bugs and called it a new year. You get a fun game but it’s not a big change.

Overview

I believe this game remains the king of baseball sims. Your eyes might get bored because the graphics look identical to the old ones. San Diego Studio keeps things clean but they play it too safe. You should expect the same stuff you already played before.

Gameplay & Mechanics

I love how the ball feels when you hit it. You can see the stitches on the ball if you look real close. Beginners will like the new help screens that explain the menus. I found that old fans might feel a bit annoyed by the lack of change.

Bear Down Pitching gives your pitcher a boost when people are on base. You use this to get easy outs in big spots. Big Zone Hitting makes the box bigger so you hit more home runs. I noticed you lose the skill of hitting the tiny sweet spot though.

Road to the Show

I played the new college mode and it has eleven real schools. Smart Sim lets you skip the boring games while keeping your stats high. You start in the junior year which feels way too fast. I hated the talking parts because the people look like dolls. Your career feels short since the story lacks any real depth.

I tried out the new dialogue boxes and they are very plain. The moving players look old. My player’s life feels more like a short book than a long story.

Diamond Dynasty

I saw many new cards from the World Baseball Classic. You can change your cards with the new Parallel Mod tool. Team Affinity now has only two paths per team to save you time.

I realized the expensive game version gives players like Ohtani to people with more money. You will struggle to win if you only buy the cheap version of the game. That feels unfair to me.

Monetization & Card Limits

I found a secret limit that stops you from holding more than twenty of the same card. This rule makes it hard for you to make fake money by trading. The shop still asks for your real cash for Stubs. I think they want you to spend more money on small things.

Franchise Mode

I really like the Trade Hub because it shows you rumors and bids. You manage your team like a real boss in this screen. It feels like a strategy game now.

They took out the March to October mode and I am sad about that. You cannot bring your old save files into this new game. The stadium builder is the same one from four years ago.

Visuals & Performance

I see no big changes in how the players look on my TV. Your PS5 controller makes sounds but the game doesn’t use the Pro power. It seems like a missed chance for better pixels.

The face scans still look a bit weird sometimes. I had lag while playing people on the internet. The announcers say the same things they said in the last game.

Negro Leagues Storylines

I think the history mode is the best part of the whole thing. You watch cool movies about stars like Roy Campanella. These stories are very sad but also very brave.

You finish quick tasks while you learn about the past. I felt like this mode actually had a heart. It makes the game worth your time.

Verdict

I believe this game is good but it stays in one spot. You might like it if you did not play for a long time. People who own the 25 game should probably just keep their money. The game is just okay because it does not try anything new. Stagnation is what happens when you don’t change.
