Super Meat Boy 3D Loses Its Soul in 3D Transition

I played this game for many hours and noticed it feels very different from the first one. Your character moves fast but the art looks like a cheap mobile app. I think the developers made a mistake when they changed the graphics to 3D. You will see that the old grit is gone now.

What the game tries to do

I grabbed the controller and felt the same tight wall jumps I loved before. Your speed stays high and the blood trail still marks every single floor. I noticed the squish sound when you die is still very loud and gross. You get sixty frames per second which makes the action feel very smooth on my screen. I think the controls are the only thing they got right this time.

Visual identity goes missing

I really hate how the new levels look like a bright kids movie. Your eyes will get tired because the colors are way too bright and shiny. I miss the dark and messy art from the old 2d version. Many games use this Pixar style now and it makes me feel bored. I found it hard to see the hazards because everything looks like plastic toys.

Missing the creator’s touch

I can tell that the original creator did not work on these new maps. Your experience feels empty because the rooms lack that weird and creepy style. I saw many levels that just look like basic blocks in a gray sky. Each stage feels like a computer made it instead of a real person. I miss the gross hand drawn monsters that used to be everywhere.

Gameplay stays solid but gets stale

I played through four worlds and started to check my watch. You should turn off the camera snap setting if you want to win. I died ten times in a row because the camera turned at a bad time. The puzzles are okay but they feel like things I played ten years ago. Your character moves well but the level design is just not very exciting.

Final thoughts

I suggest you skip this one unless you really love jumping on walls. Your time is better spent playing the original game with the better art. I feel that the 3d change stripped away all the magic and heart. The game works fine but it has no personality left at all. I hope the next game goes back to the old messy look.
