James Ohlen Leaves Archetype Entertainment

James Ohlen, renowned as the ‘godfather of BioWare design,’ has stepped down from his position at Archetype Entertainment, the studio behind the highly anticipated game Exodus. The move comes as the game, which promises to be a worthy successor to Mass Effect, is set to launch in 2027.

A Storied Career

Ohlen is best known for his pivotal role in creating iconic titles like Baldur’s Gate and Dragon Age: Origins. After 22 years at BioWare, he joined Wizards of the Coast in 2019. His departure from Archetype comes as the studio pushes forward with Exodus, a game that bears a striking resemblance to Mass Effect.

Why He’s Leaving

According to a statement from Hasbro’s VP of Communications, Abby Hodes, Ohlen felt his work on Exodus was complete and that the team was well‑equipped to handle the remaining tasks. He will continue to serve as a consultant for tabletop gaming at Wizards of the Coast.

What We Know About Exodus

The game was showcased with a new trailer at the Game Awards 2025 and promises to deliver all the elements fans loved about Mass Effect, including meaningful relationships with NPCs. A unique time‑dilation twist will let players see the consequences of their choices when they revisit past locations decades—or even centuries—later.

Despite being a new studio that started work during the pandemic, Exodus appears to be a high‑budget project. Its release, however, has been delayed until 2027.

Beyond the Game

Exodus is not just a game but the beginning of a potential new franchise for Hasbro. The company has already released an Exodus TTRPG book and is likely considering other products such as trading card games and TV spin‑offs if the title becomes a hit.

Leadership Changes

Ohlen’s departure coincides with the appointment of Paul Della Bitta, a former Blizzard executive, as the new head of Wizards’ Digital Ventures division. Many other BioWare veterans remain at Archetype, ensuring continuity in the project’s development.

Looking Ahead

As Exodus continues to take shape, fans are eager to see if it can live up to the legacy of Mass Effect. With James Ohlen stepping down but staying involved as a consultant, and a seasoned team at the helm, the future of Exodus looks promising.
