Larian Studios Uses AI for Development, Assures Human Creativity

Larian Studios Embraces AI for Development Despite Mixed Reactions

Larian Studios, the creator of Baldur’s Gate 3, is increasingly using generative AI in its development process, despite some resistance from staff and fans. Studio head Swen Vincke shared that the technology is primarily used for brainstorming and early prototyping, such as creating PowerPoint presentations, placeholder text, and concept art.

AI for Early Prototyping

Vincke emphasized that the majority of the team is comfortable with the current use of AI. It helps the studio quickly explore ideas, generate rough visuals, and spot plot inconsistencies before any polished assets are produced.

Human Creativity Remains Central

He also assured that no AI‑generated content will appear in finished games, including the upcoming turn‑based RPG Divinity. “Everything is human actors; we’re writing everything ourselves,” Vincke stated. This stance aligns with his previous views that the unique touch of human developers will continue to define great games.

Industry Controversy

The use of AI in game development is not without controversy. Earlier this year, AI‑generated content in another game sparked a backlash from players, highlighting the fine line between innovation and concerns over creativity and plagiarism.
