OTA Update Overview
Rivian owners can now leave their key fobs at home. The company’s latest over‑the‑air (OTA) update introduces full Digital Key support, allowing drivers to use their iPhones or Apple Watches to unlock and start their vehicles seamlessly.
Digital Key Features
The .46 OTA update enables Digital Key functionality for second‑generation R1S and R1T vehicles. This feature leverages Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology for precise, hands‑free unlocking and Near Field Communication (NFC) for backup access.
Apple Power Reserve
Apple’s Power Reserve ensures drivers can still unlock their vehicles even if their phone battery is dead, for up to five hours.
Increased Key Slots
The update raises the number of digital keys per vehicle from four to eight, making it easier for families or friends to share access.
Future Wallet Support
Rivian has announced plans to extend this functionality to Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet in the future.
Compatibility & Future Plans
This update brings Rivian’s technology in line with industry leaders like BMW and Tesla. Previously, Rivian owners relied on the Rivian app’s Bluetooth unlocking, which was less seamless and didn’t offer the same level of convenience or security.
Impact for Drivers
For drivers, this means no more worrying about losing or forgetting their key fobs. The ability to share digital keys via text message adds an extra layer of convenience, allowing friends or family members to access the vehicle without needing a physical key.
Rollout Timeline
The .46 OTA update is expected to roll out later this month. However, only second‑generation vehicles will receive the full Digital Key experience due to hardware requirements. First‑generation vehicles may not get the full suite of features.
This update is just the beginning for Rivian’s second‑generation platform, signaling a broader push to integrate advanced technology and make their vehicles feel more like high‑tech software on wheels.
