Solasta 2 Early Access Review: A Smarter CRPG Successor
I spent several hours exploring the new world of Solasta 2 on Steam this week. You will find that this game improves on everything the first one did right. The developers used the new 2024 D&D rules which makes every fight feel much more intense. Buy this game if you want a real challenge that tests your brain. I think the changes are small but they make a massive difference in how much fun you have.
Overview
I noticed that the sequel feels way more polished than the original title did at launch. You should prepare for a deep dive into rules that actually matter for your survival. The game world has more detail now and looks less like a simple toy set. I found that the tactical engine is still the best part of the whole experience. Every choice you make in the menu has an impact on how you win your next battle.
Character Creation & Story
I really like how the character builder helps you avoid making a team that looks silly. You can choose from many classic races like elves or dwarves to build your perfect squad. The story begins at a funeral which is a very emotional way to start a quest. I heard a familiar voice because Devora Wilde plays your sister in the game. She did a great job as Lae’zel in the past and she is great here too. You also get to hear Ben Starr who voiced the main guy in the latest Final Fantasy game. I think the voice acting adds a lot of flavor that was missing before.
Exploration
I love the new map because it uses hexagons to let you travel wherever you want. You are no longer stuck on a straight line when you move through Neokos. Watch your timer because some missions will disappear if you take too many naps. I found that the open world feels more alive than the rooms in the first game. You must manage your resources or your heroes will get too tired to fight well.
Combat
I think the combat is the main reason anyone should play this game right now. You have to use the vertical space to get the best shots on your enemies. Harpies will use magic to control your mind so you have to stay very alert. I fought a giant with two heads and had to use traps to survive the encounter. Position your wizards on high ledges so they can rain fire down on the bad guys. I saw some enemies standing still but the developers are fixing the AI as we speak.
Mechanics & Rules
I found the rules are very strict about what you can hold in your hands. You cannot cast most spells if you are carrying a big shield and a mace. This follows the 5E rules which many purists will appreciate. Put your weapon away before you try to use your magic powers or you will fail. I think this adds a layer of realism that makes the game feel like a real table top session.
Future Updates
I am looking forward to the new patches that add crafting and more classes. You will be able to play with your friends once the co-op mode is finished. The current level cap is four but it will be much higher in the full version. I saw the roadmap and it looks like many great things are coming later this year.
Conclusion
I suggest you pick this up if you love making different character builds. You get to play through the whole first act which has plenty of content for the price. This game is a smart step forward for the series and I enjoyed every minute of it. I think the tactical depth is something you won’t find in many other games today. Get your copy on Steam and start your adventure in Neokos right now.
