How to Stay on iOS 18 and Keep Getting Security Updates
Generally, Apple is trying to push everybody to upgrade to iOS 26, they do this by stopping iOS 18 updates. Normally, you would not see any iOS 18 updates on your device if it is capable of running iOS 26. Basically, the company wants you on the newest platform so they can give you new features and security fixes.
Apple’s Push Toward iOS 26
Currently, iPhone users who own an iPhone 11 or later cannot see iOS 18 releases in the Settings → General → Software Update screen. Usually, the reason for this is that Apple wants users on the newest platform, where they can push both new features and security fixes. Honestly, it makes sense for Apple to want everybody on the same page.
Why iOS 18 Updates Disappear
Often, when you own a newer iPhone, the Settings → General → Software Update screen will stop showing iOS 18 releases, this is because Apple wants you to upgrade. Naturally, you might be wondering why Apple is doing this, the answer is they want you on the newest platform. Probably, the main reason is that they can give you better security and new features.
Temporary Workaround: Enable the iOS 18 Public Beta
Actually, you can still get iOS 18 updates by enrolling in the iOS 18 public beta, this is a good workaround for now. Usually, this will give you any new iOS 18 builds that Apple releases, at least for the short term. Already, some people have started using this method to stay on iOS 18.
Security Updates Are Still Available in iOS 18
Generally, Apple’s recent security patches, like iOS 26.2 and iOS 18.7.3, have fixed some big security issues. Normally, these updates would be available to everybody, but now they are only available if you are on the newest platform or if you are using the beta workaround. Basically, you can still get these critical fixes if you stay on iOS 18 and use the beta.
A Pattern Repeating Over the Years
Interestingly, Apple has done this before, in 2021 they did the same thing when they were transitioning from iOS 14 to iOS 15. Usually, users could stay on the older version temporarily and still get security updates. Probably, this is just a normal part of how Apple does things.
Apple’s Stated Intent
According to Apple, the ability to stay on an older iOS version is only temporary, they want everybody on the latest iOS for security and support reasons. Normally, this makes sense, but some people might not want to upgrade right away. Already, some users are complaining about the new “Liquid Glass” design changes in iOS 26.
What You Should Do Now
Really, if you want to stay on iOS 18, you should enroll in the iOS 18 public beta, this will give you some extra time. Usually, it is a good idea to keep an eye on Apple’s communications, they might withdraw this pathway at any time. Basically, the safest bet is to prepare for an eventual upgrade to iOS 26, but the beta route gives you a little breathing room.
