Indie RPG ‘Sword Hero’ Delivers FromSoftware-Level Combat in Its Latest Demo
A Combat System That Stands Out
Generally I am impressed by the demo, Obviously the fights felt like a dance with swords, But sometimes it feels too fast for me.
Seriously the melee feels heavy, Like each swing has a weight and a sound that makes my heart pound.
Normally it remind me of Jedi Academy lightsaber duels, But the timing is stricter, And I miss a block, the clang is brutal.
Usually I had to think about each attack, Not just mash buttons, And that felt refreshing yet confusing at times.
Emergent Gameplay and Chaos
Apparently the arenas are full of traps, So I learned to use a backflip-kick to send a foe into spikes.
Often I throw a mine in the air, And it explode near me, Which is scary but also kinda fun.
Sometimes I saw a limb get cut off, And the enemy kept fighting with one arm, Which felt wild and a bit buggy.
Naturally the chaos makes each fight feel fresh, Even if I die a lot, I keep trying new tricks.
A Roguelike Twist on Progression
Eventually the tournament mode pushes me through 35 fights, Each with random gear and arena layouts.
Basically when I win, I unlock better swords, But a single loss drops me to a lower tier, Which is harsh but motivating.
Generally it feels like a ranked ladder, Yet the randomness keeps it from feeling stale.
Obviously the progression system is a key part of the game, And it seems to be well implemented.
A Promising but Unfinished Experience
Honestly the swordplay shines, But the magic feels weak and the archery is kinda bland in tight arenas.
Hopefully the devs have time to polish these parts before the full release.
Fortunately the Kickstarter already hit its goal, And there’s still time to add an extra island if they reach the stretch target.
Apparently ForestWare plans a full alpha next spring and a launch by the end of 2027, Which gives them plenty of room to improve.
A Game to Watch
Clearly if you love skill-based combat, You should check out Sword Hero, Because it mixes methodical duels with crazy emergent moments.
Obviously the demo is on Steam right now, So I added it to my wishlist and hope the final game lives up to the hype.
Normally I would wait for the full release before making a final judgment, But so far, Sword Hero looks very promising.
Ultimately I think the game has a lot of potential, And I am excited to see how it develops.
